So you’re thinking about getting chickens – it’s all in the breed!

Don’t rush into it, take time to think and plan, to choose. The key questions to ask yourself are, “What characteristics am I looking for and what breeds suit my circumstances?” This really should determine what you buy, before you buy them.

Here are some key characteristics to look for:

Laying potential

Personality/temperament

Duel-purpose birds vs single purpose specialty birds

Broodiness/motherhood capacity

Their look or the “WOW” factor

Potential pets

So what does all this mean?

Laying potential

All chickens lay eggs but some chickens lay more eggs, larger eggs and different coloured eggs. If egg laying capacity is important to you then you should do your research and make sure the breed you are considering is a ‘good layer’. Likewise, if you want to have ‘rainbow’ eggs then look for chickens that lay different coloured shells – blue, green, dark brown, white, blush pink or speckled brown are all obtainable.

Personality

Just like us, chickens have different temperaments and whilst there are individual differences, it is fair to say that the breed of chicken, along with the circumstances of breeding, strongly influences their personality. Things you might want to consider include how friendly and people-orientated they are, if they are ‘flighty’ or calm, whether they are happy being contained, whether they are bossy or happy to ‘fit right in’, and whether they like to be petted.

Duel-purpose verses single purpose speciality birds

A duel-purpose chicken will supply you with a reasonable number of eggs but is also of a size and weight that they make ‘good eating’. These breeds are generally pure-breed heirloom or heritage and have been bred with ‘back-yard’ sustainability in mind. Most likely your grandparent’s chickens would have been duel-purpose as they wanted eggs and meat. Whilst they are duel-purpose keeping them for either eggs or meat alone is fine. They are generally hardy and long-lived.

On the other-hand, specialty birds are birds that are breed with one purpose in mind, most commonly eggs. Specialty layers are usually hybrids, which means it is a crossbreed (not any one breed). They are lighter in frame than heritage breeds (who are mostly duel-purpose), so they do not require as much food, but they must have nutrient-dense food if they are to lay and remain healthy. Whilst they lay prolifically for the first 12-18 months, laying at that ‘level’ takes a lot out of a chicken, so they can be prone to illness and shorter lives.

Broodiness/motherhood

There are chicken breeds that are known for their propensity to go ‘broody’, also known as ‘clucky’. They love to be mothers – it is their greatest joy. Which is fantastic for them and you if that is what you want but not good for either of you if you don’t! There is nothing lovelier than raising a brood of chicks under a hen but broodiness and breeding does add a layer of complication, so perhaps to be avoided until you are ready to take that step.

5. WOW Factor

It’s all in the name – we are referring to those chooks that are fabulous to look at. The ones that your visitors will go “wow, what is that bird, she is beautiful!?” J They are still chickens, lay eggs, scratch, etc. they just happen to be chickens that are gorgeous as well as functional. Yes, it is a joy to have a mixed flock of these beauties to behold, but you should not choose on looks alone – you must consider all other factors carefully.

Pets

These are chickens who are happy interacting with their ‘peeps’, being cuddled and ‘spoilt’. They make great pets and therapy animals. Of course they will lay eggs and do other chicken ‘stuff’, but if you are wanting pets for company or ‘ambiance’ these are a great addition.

Bella’s mum was also called Bella and she was very special to us in many ways. Sadly we had just lost her from complications she experienced after a fire. But we had been collecting her fertile eggs, which became, understandably, very precious.

Bella no 1. was a Silver-laced Wyandotte, but not your standard black and white feathered bird but a Blue-laced Silver Wyandotte. She was my last of this line and so this my final chance to breed more.

There was a lot of pressure on this chick, first to hatch successfully, then to thrive and then to have Blue-laced feathers. Anyway, she did it! There was a sting in her tail though, Bella was born with a straight-comb, which is considered a ‘major fault’ in the Silver-laced Wyandotte breed standard. And so, we could not breed from her (whilst we don’t show, we do breed to standard). So she got the last laugh.

She would reign supreme in our flock as the only VERY BEAUTIFUL Blue-laced Silver Wyandotte. A status that suits her fine!

I cannot recall why a group of brooding Pekin Bantams were in the third bedroom but I do remember it was fun. And, yes, bedlam. And perhaps a tad messy. Anyway, into creature comforts Bella and her siblings were hatched. Her start in life was good, Pekin Bantams make wonderful chook mothers, doating on their chicks. She was raised in a secure pen with the best food and learnt to scratch and explore her surrounds under the strict guidance of her mum from an early age. In essence she grew up safe and happy with strong family. That security has never left her.

A few times over the last 18 months we thought Bella would pass. Times when she would slow down, loose her appetite, seem depressed. We would give her special treatment – scrambled eggs, kefir-soaked oats, sardines – and quietly prepare ourselves for the ‘goodbye’. She beat the odds though and rallied every time! She still lets me know that she needs special treatment, she follows me whenever she can until I bring out the soaked oats, cracked corn and sunflower seeds.

As Chickens Age

There may be more things we need to consider as Bella ages, for example lower a perch so she can still roost but with less effort, take extra care to ensure she is always warm, watch closely for signs of parasites as resistance is compromised with age, her feet may suffer too if she becomes less active and most especially her food might need changing. The food needs of your flock change over time, Cheryl Nelson from Natural Chicken Health has an excellent blog about this called Feeding Your Flock, which is well worth taking a look at. Folks often tell us that if they come back as a chicken in a next life, they would like to come back as one of ours. I’m sure Bella has put in a few good references. She certainly has never disappointed us. Well, except for the straight—comb, but I got over that long ago. Viva la Straight-Comb Bella. Just the way she is.

Pipping is when a chick breaks through the inner membrane of an egg and then through the outer egg too. You’ve waited 21 days for this to happen, wondered about the effects of the weather, the temperature, the humidity … trust me, hatching chicks can be stressful! And the pipping is only the start of it. Some chicks once pipped will ‘bounce’ out of the shell, whilst others take up to 24 hours. And did you know that the chick has a special ‘egg tooth’ which is a small sharp bump on the top of their beck that they use first to break and then to saw around the shell it to uncap it, so that they can kick their way free? Amazing adaptation. Of course the whole process is exhausting for them, which is why they need time to rest and fluff-up before tackling life. They won’t need water or food for at least 24 hours, so let them rest, don’t disturb them just yet …

Every year we ponder whether we will hatch this spring. But then the orders start coming in from folks so very excited to be beginning a flock or adding to their collection. And any musing we had about ‘having a year off’ fades to nought. Why? Because the excitement when people collect their pullets is contagious. I do remember also getting my own first chooks, so I know how special it is. It isn’t a simple operation though, for us breeding seasons starts weeks, sometimes months, before the first chick pips. First we need to choose what breeds we will go with each year, create separate housing and yards for our breeding groups and then separate them out. Then we wait 3 weeks before we start to collect eggs to hatch, that way ensuring that the lines are pure. After all of that preparation we can begin to hatch.

And so back to pipping! It’s a great moment. You can breathe knowing that the hatch is going to be OK. We will hatch every week for the next couple of months, waiting for the pipping will get to me every time! But in the end you have a hat full of chicks, which we call a swaddle of hope. Hope that they will all be strong, hope that they will all be girls and, most importantly, hope that they will all find caring and respectful homes. This year we are breeding Silver-laced Wyandotte, Barnvelder, Araucana, Australorp and Speckle Sussex. If you’d like to know more then take a look here https://www.schoolhousefarm.com.au/chickens/ for details.
